Detailed Walkthrough
Quest Offer
The noble says:
(player's name), a madman they call the (region's name) Ripper is terrorizing the city of (current city), and my guards and constabulary are helpless against him. They have no clues to his identity whatsoever. I know you have some resources and rather untraditional contacts. Can you try and help me in this matter, for the good of all (region's name) -- and a substantial sum of gold?
Quest Acceptance
The noble goes on:
You are a true friend, (player's first name). The people of (region's name) are becoming anxious about the lack of progress in the official investigations. The situation is becoming explosive, with people afraid that the Ripper is coming for them next. I fear that we will have a mob situation soon, perhaps within (time limit) days or less. The only other person I've unofficially hired on this is (contact's name), a local scholar who has been analyzing some of the letters I've been sent. Go to (bookstore) to talk to (him/her) first, and check on (his/her) progress. If you cannot solve this mystery, then (random god) help us all.
Quest Decline
The noble answers:
Not an uncommon response. Then I have little choice, but to call on some of my less savoury contacts for help -- an option I was hoping to avoid.
Quest Object
You first object is to meet with the contact the noble mentioned to you, he/she will be in a bookstore in town. Two scenarios are possible:
- The contact is still there, just talk to him/her and receive some information about his investigations and about a whore living in town who might have some clues that will lead you to the ripper. You will also be given a letter the whore has written to the contact. To find the whore, just ask the people in town where she is staying. Once you know this place, meet her.
- The ripper was faster than you, this will happen 25 minutes to 14 hours after the quest was started. In this case you will only find the corpse of the contact you should meet. In addition you will find two letters from the ripper, addressed to the noble who gave you this quest. The letters brim over with misspellings and the rippers boasts openly about his doings in them. However you will also find the letter the whore sent to the contact, read it to learn her name. Since the contact can not help you anymore, meet with the whore. Just ask the people in town where she can be found.
The next step is talking to the whore. There are once again two possible scenarios:
- The whore is safe and sound. In this case she will tell you about one of her suitors, who became more and more possessed of her over time. Now he is sending her threatening letters and she believes that this may be the wanted ripper all are looking for. She will give you the latest of these letters, again brimming over with misspellings, and tells you where this suitor can be found. Ask the people in town where the house he is living is located and enter it.
- The ripper was once again faster than you, this will happen about two hours to one day after the quest was started. In this case you will only find the corpse of the whore. But also in this case you will find the last of the threatening letters the whore has received over time. Read the letter to learn the name of its addresser. Ask the people in town where this guy can be found and enter the house he is living.
The house's door(s) will be locked, so you will need some means to get entrance. Inside the house you will encounter a nightblade, the wanted ripper. He will yell at you once you hit him for the first time. Defeat him in combat, but since nightblades are spellcaster he might have some powerful magic attacks in store for you, especial at higher levels. Once you have executed the nightblade, report back to the noble to inform him/her that the ripper no longer poses a threat for the region. Afterwards you will get the promised reward.
Quest Object Dead
You won't get any notification when the ripper is killed.
Quest End
When you report your success, the noble will by overjoyed and says:
(current city) is at peace again, (player's first name), thanks to you. Here is the (random gold) gold I promised -- gladly will I give it for the end of that maniac. (random god) truly blessed us when you came to (region's name).

Notes
- This quest is only found on the original CD or free distribution of Daggerfall. For some unknown reasons the latest official patch 2.13 replaces this quest with a quest that is identical to A Special Substance. If you want to play the original quest, copy the R0C11Y26.QBN and R0C11Y26.QRC files from the ARENA2 directory of the original medium into the ARENA2 directory of your local Daggerfall installation. Naturally AFTER you have patched the game.
- The time limit of this quest is always two days.
- Since the contact is waiting at a bookstore you can't complete this quest if you get it from a noble of Wayrest. Wayrest City has not a single bookstore, therefore the contact will be missing from the quest.
