Julienne Fanis

Julienne Fanis, a Breton alchemist, is a Wizard of the Mages Guild and the head of the University's Lustratorium.

She never seems to stress much and will spend her days in peace. After waking up very early at midnight she will spend the next six hours wandering aimlessly around the Lustratorium. At 6am she will pick up her mortar & pestle and start mixing up potions, eventually stopping at 10am. Her remaining time, until 6pm, she will spend wandering around the Alchemy center before heading back to the upper floor of the Mage Quarters and going back to bed. The only change to this schedule is during the Tears of the Savior quest, when she will be found all day in the Arch-Mage's Lobby waiting for you as soon as S'drassa refers you to her. Once you have acquired the refined frost salts from her she will resume her normal schedule.

She has a Mercantile skill of 80 and only 15 gold, which makes her useful only after you have invested in her. She will buy and sell ingredients, potions and alchemical apparatus and is the only merchant to sell Refined Frost Salts, even if in a very limited supply.

She wears upper-class attire consisting of a red velvet blouse and garment with a pair of gold trimmed shoes. She also carries her novice mortar & pestle and a sizable amount of gold. She doesn't wield any weapons, relying instead on a set of leveled spells from all of the magical schools.

Julienne will say hello to the player in passing with, "Welcome to the Alchemy Headquarters." The first time the player meets her she will greet the player with, "Julienne Fanis. I'm the Alchemy Expert. At least, the best the Mages Guild has." When asked about the Imperial City, she will tip you if you're in need of ingredients: "I rarely leave the University, as I have all I need right here. If you need ingredients, try Ogier Georick at The Main Ingredient." And when you finish off your conversation with her she will say: "If you come across any unusual ingredients in your travels, be sure to remember me and bring them here." If, however, you present her with a sample of Nirnroot, she will be more than puzzled and will guide you on to Sinderion in Skingrad: "Hmmm. No. Never seen one of those before. Strikingly beautiful. If you find yourself in Skingrad, drop in on the alchemist Sinderion. His speciality [sic] is plants, and I bet he could tell you more."

During the Tears of the Savior quest, S'drassa suggets you pay her a visit: "I'm not certain what happened to the knight, or why the tears were frozen, but I do know someone you could ask. Seek out Julienne Fanis at the Arcane University in the Imperial City. She oversees the Alchemy Headquaters [sic] there. If anyone can help you get more information about these crystals, she can." He also suggests she will be able to help with finding refined frost salts: "Yes. I've heard of mages who seal portals with an ingredient as a key. Makes the door impossible to lockpick. Refined frost salts sounds like something that Julienne would specialize in. You may want to go back to the University and speak to her."

Indeed, she will provide you with interesting information about Garridan's Tears: "You aren't the first person to go looking for those. Quite a remarkable story, really, I know a bit about it." If you are in a hurry she will be offended: "Oh, very well. No need to be rude. If you want to find the Tears. I'd suggest reading a book called "Knightfall." The information inside may assist your search." If on the other hand you wish to hear the story she will go on: "Certainly, Garridan was a knight who lorded over a small village of peaceful farmers. One harvest summer, there was a horrible drought. The farmers appealed to Garridan to discover a solution. He spent a week consulting with sages, until one of them mentioned a possibility. The sage told him of an artifact called the Everflow Ewer. The vessel, which looked like a silver pitcher, was said to supply endless water." When you express your amazement she will continue: "Yes, indeed. Legend has it that Garridan found the Ewer, and that it was guarded by a fearsome creature. It is also said that the creature froze him. When Garridan realized his quest was a failure, and he wouldn't be able to return and save the farmers, he began to shed some tears. As the ice enveloped him, some of his tears were frozen as well. Some even say that the Divine, Mara, took pity on the poor knight. To commemorate his kind heart, she imbued the Tears with some sort of magical power. That's only a rumor though. You know, if you're really interested in more, there's a book I read once called "Knightfall." It may have more about Garridan."

She will then tell you where to locate a copy: "I think I saw a copy last time I was at The First Edition Bookshop in the Market District." If pursued about the Tears she will be apologetic: "I wish I could tell you more about them, but that's all I remember from speaking to my colleagues here at the University." If you speak with Julienne after she has referred you to the First Edition but before you have received the frost salts from her, she will bid farewell with, "Please, visit me again anytime. I'm glad to help. Give S'drassa my regards." Once you have found and read a copy of Knightfall, you will need to speak with Julienne about the Refined Frost Salts needed to open the glade. She will tell you: "Yes. I have them for sale. If you'd like to buy some, feel free. They're top quality... I refined them myself." The salts cost at least 76 Septims and are weightless quest items. You only need one sample for the quest. Even if you did not purchase all of the samples she will comment: "Sorry, that's all I had. The refining process is quite costly, and very tedious." After finding at least one of Garridan's Tears, she may joke to a passing player: "Is that a bit of frostbite I see? Hehehe." When spoken to, she will greet the player with, "Have you spoken to S'drassa yet? I hear she eagerly awaits your return." If you then speak to her about Garridan's Tears, she will say: "You actually found them? Interesting. I'll have to make a note of that."

During the quest Alchemy Acquisitions, Raminus Polus will send you her way: "As the Arch-Mage, you are entitled to certain privileges. In addition to the full use of all Guild facilities, there is one service available to you. Julienne Fanis has long served Arch-Mage Traven in collecting alchemical ingredients for his personal research. As the new Arch-Mage, I'm sure she'll extend the service to you as well. At your convenience, consult her at the Lustratorium." When you speak to her about it, she will inform you about a special chest: "Ah, yes. Arch-Mage Traven was quite fond of making potions in his spare time. So much so, in fact, that it became difficult for me to meet his needs. I finally accomodated [sic] him by enchanting a very special chest for him. You'll find it in the Arch Mage's quarters. Once a week, place a single ingredient in the chest. After twenty-four hours, you'll find a sizable quantity of the ingredient available for use. Do be prompt in collecting them, however. Anything left in the chest for a full week will be destroyed. And before you ask, yes this only works with ingredients. Be very careful in what you place in that chest. I can't be held responsible."

Notes

  • The Refined Frost Salts do not appear in Julienne's barter list until stage 50 of the Tears of the Savior quest, nor will they be restocked once purchased, making them quite rare.
  • Julienne is one of several characters who expresses disdain if you approach her while wearing a Necromancer's Robe.
