Transparent.gif introduction
Transparent.gif Abstract concepts such as emotions, beliefs, and traditions are not something that are portrayed well in a computer game like the Elder Scrolls series. They can, however, be described and entertained in a fan fiction story. One of the most important tools you can use when writing fan fiction is to ask yourself "why?" repeatedly. Why did your character do that? Why is that important to your character? In this section you may find the answers to some of those questions in The Gaersmith Legacy, but most importantly, it is a place to keep such issues internally consistent with the rest of the storyline.

Traditions

Many of the family traditions handed down to Daric are from time immemorial to the Gaersmith family. They often cannot even remember why they have these traditions, or how far back they go.

Patriarchy

The true lineage of the Gaersmiths is passed only from the eldest son to the eldest son. Any subsequent male siblings will generally change their surname before their 20th birthdayUser-Daric Gaersmith-Idea 32x32.png. Female children change their surname upon marriage.

Conception and Birth

It is a firmly established tradition of the Gaersmith family that the eldest son be born under the star of the Mage, so conception is planned for the month of Sun's Height, generally around the Sun's Rest holiday of the 20th. If all goes to plan, the next generation should be born at some time within Rain's Hand the following year. If this proves to be a female child, the parents will try again for conception three months later, during the next Sun's Height. Once the heir is born, there are generally no further children born to that generation.

Study and Work

Although the individual skills required by a Gaersmith to ply their trade can be learned independently, putting all those skills together in the way that this family has done successfully for generations can only be achieved by learning from the previous generation. That is why it is so important that the younger generation master their basic skills before their father is too old to pass on his knowledge. Each new Gaersmith patriarch must become a master of Enchanting, a master of Smithing, and a master of Speech (specializing in trade) before they can comprehend how to apply the secrets of the Gaersmith success in crafting, enchanting, and selling their wares. While Smithing and Speech are not too hard to master, to become a true master of Enchanting generally takes 10 years of solid study, practice, and independent research. By tradition, the young Gaersmith patriarch will study Enchanting at the College of Winterhold from the age of 30 to the age of 40 years, then return to their father for finishing, and take over the family business.
