Detailed Walkthrough
Acquiring the Quest
When you walk the road north from Elden Root in the direction to Cormount, turn east when you are on the bridge in front of the junction to Karthdar and you will see a treehouse. Climb up the treehouse to meet its three inhabitants, Tholor the Dreg, Rinces and Afwa. As Tholor is sleeping and Rinces is a squirrel, there is only Afwa left to talk to:
- Don't get many visitors. If you're here for the ruin, best turn back. No good's come outta that place in ... oh, several hundred years. Give or take a decade or so.
- What ruin?
- "What ruin?" As if any other mattered. Laeloria. Sealed up tighter than an Ansei tomb. Twice as dangerous.
- That's the kind of thing that happens when Daedric Princes start feuding with one another. Shame what happened to Culanwe, though.
- Who is Culanwe?
- Priestess of Azura. Molag Bal's been torturing her longer than you, me, maybe even those trees have been alive – and he's not like to stop unless someone makes him.
- Old Vastarie tried, Haven't seen her since.
- Molag Bal? I'll make him stop.
At that point you get the quest assigned, but the conversation continues:
- Best of luck to you. Laeloria's sealed up tight, and by Azura's own hand. It'll take some doing to get in, never mind thwart Molag Bal, rescue Culanwe, and make your way back here.
- Say hello to Vastarie if she's still kicking, will you? It's been an age.
- How do you know so much about Laeloria?
- Used to study magic, back in the day, Under a powerful mage named Vastarie. Taught Tholor and me everything we know.
- We were her best students, so when she walked into Laeloria, she told us what to do if things went wrong.
- What did she say?
- She gave us a crystal. Told us if the beacon on her tower ever turns red, we're to break it, no questions asked. When we do, everything around her tower - trees, Laeloria, all of it - will be unmade.
- If we don't ... well. We're in trouble.
- What sort of trouble?
- Well, we're not sure exactly, but when Vastarie went down there, Daedra poured out and killed all our fellow students. It was all we could do to make it to a safe vantage point. But the tower never turned, so here we are.
- How long have you been waiting?
- Tholor says it's a hundred years this Rain's Hand, but me? I'd put it more at ninety-seven - give or take a few.
Vastarie's Tower
Now get to solid ground again and head onward to the Tower of Vastarie. You can either head in a more or less straight line west by south from the treehouse and end up in its back yard, or you take the more scenic approach. For the latter, follow the road down a bit south and turn westward at the crossing before Elden Root. When you reach a terrace with a Bosmer alchemist's booth on it, turn north and climb the way up the hill; on its top you find the tower.
Before you enter it, just follow an invitation by a strange voice and those wandering lights into a shrine nearby. Azura wants to have a talk with you:
- Mortal, you stand above the sealed ruins of Laeloria. Within is a gateway to Coldharbour, where my priestess Culanwe suffers at the hands of Molag Bal. Her pain is so great, it has torn a hole between worlds.
- This injustice must end.
- What are you?
- I am the Daedric Prince of Dawn and Dusk, the Mother of the Rose, who sealed Laeloria away from your world.
- I am Azura, mortal. And I would put an end to Culanwe's long suffering beneath its gates, below.
- Why do you need me?
- When Vastarie found these ruins and sought to end Culanwe's torment, she failed, and was lost.
- Go to Vastarie's tower. Follow her footsteps, and mortal - do not fail, as she did.
- Who is Vastarie?
- Who was Culanwe?
When asking for Vastarie:
- A powerful wizard who built the tower behind you. She studied Laeloria for years, always patient, until finally she found a way through.
- But despite her preparations, Molag Bal's servants overwhelmed her companions. She was forever lost.
- If you sealed Laeloria, why not open it for her?
- Laeloria is the mouth of a bottle that floats through Coldharbour. My seal is the cork. Should I release the seal, Molag Bal's servants will pour into Laeloria until they have nowhere else to go but here.
- Vastarie found a way to slip past the seal. As must you.
- Who was Culanwe?
When asking for Culanwe:
- Culanwe was the most beloved of my servants. Her voice bent the world to her will, yet she used her power for selfless works. Until she was taken to Coldharbour.
- Molag Bal made her song of pain last millennia. But in his distraction, you will recover her.
- What can you tell me about Vastarie?
And so on... Exit the conversation by saying Goodbye and head for the entrance of the Mansion called Tower of Vastarie. You will find in a bit desolate order and infested with some lower Daedra. Start collecting hints on Vastarie's research. They come in form of three notes, scattered around within the building: Loriasel Tablet, Entry 1, Loriasel Tablet, Entry 2 and Loriasel Tablet, Entry 4. Once you have all three of them, you will know about the Loriasel Tablet and how to call the Winged Twilight named Irrai that is bound into it. Find the tablet and interact with it:
- <The spidery script upon the tablet seems to flicker when you don't look at it directly.>
- I think I'm supposed to say "Irrai."
- <The tablet pulses with power.>
Speak the word to summon the Daedra; then talk to her:
- Greetings, outsider. As the will of my Prince is eternal, I heed your call.
- Who is your Prince?
- Azura. You know of Azura, don't you? "Irrai the Fleet," she named me.
- But that was long ago. This shriveled vessel is but a shadow of my former glory. My wings ache to soar the skies of Oblivion once more.
- I'm looking for a way into Laeloria.
- Vastarie pierced the seal with a relic known as the Twilit Heart. It still stands before the gates of Laeloria, bereft of magical energies.
- You'll need to feed it souls. And with all these Daedra about, you'll have your pick.
- How would I do that?
- The wizard Vastarie kept quite the stock of sigil geodes, which I suppose should do.
- There are still some around. I can smell them from here.
- Do you remember Vastarie?
- Why are you helping me?
If you asked for Vastarie:
- Of course, she was the last to summon me. Together, we opened the ruins of Laeloria. She ventured in with her noble companions.
- I watched them die in a flood of Daedra. It was all I could do to escape and seal the ruin ... Vastarie's final command.
- Why are you helping me?
If you why she helps you:
- Ignoring the fact that my Prince's unbreakable will compels me to open the way to Laeloria, despite the unspeakably bloody terror to greet you on the other side?
- Yes.
- You could be Molag Bal himself for all I know. I'd still help you open the door, Lord of Brutality or not.
- You aren't him, are you?
- Of course not.
- [Lie] I am. And I'm very disappointed in you, Irrai.
If you tell the boring truth:
- Good, good.
- I'd expect the Harvester of Souls to be taller.
- Why would you help Molag Bal?
- Try waiting in a rock until someone calls your name. Then, watch them reduced to a smear of viscera the moment you do what they've asked you to do. You try to find joy where you can.
- The joy of aiding another, of course.
- Do you remember Vastarie?
If you claim to be Molag Bal:
- No you're not. Not enough horns.
- And you don't smell of rotten meat. Molag Bal has terrible hygiene, even a scamp knows that.
And so on... Again you can leave the conversation loop by choosing the Goodbye option. Follow Irrai as she will guide you to an alchemy table where a small box contains a sigil geode. Take it and now it is Irrai's turn to be your follower. Use some of the Daedra in the house or outside in the yard to charge the geode. For that you have to reduce their health until you can interact with them, then do so to drain their remaining life.
Laeloria
Now head towards Laeloria's entrance. On the place in front of it stands the Twilit Heart, a crystal on a stele. Use the geode on it to transfer it's power. Irrai will then move to open Laeloria gate. Follow her inside. Where you and Irrai will encounter the still very alive and very angry Vastarie. You learn that Irrai once betrayed the wizard and lured her into this trap, as she planed to do with you. Help her battle the treacherous Daedra. When sufficiently hurt, the winged twilight will try to escape and Vastarie follows her around the room to finally pin her down. While she is holding Irrai on the ground, she wants to tell you something:
- The sigil geode! Do you still have it?
- Yes, I do. Why?
- Touching the Sigil Geode to Irrai's forehead will absorb her soul. It's the only way we'll ever leave this place.
- Why is that?
- If she dies outside of that stone, we'll spend the next century counting the tiles in this place.
- I noted thirty-two thousand seven hundred and eight. But you're welcome to check my figures.
- That doesn't explain why I should trap Irrai.
- In the depths of this ruin is a portal leading straight to Coldharbour. We can only close it from the other side.
- Once in Coldharbour, we'll have no hope of escape unless Irrai is inside that stone. Quickly, I can't keep this up for long!
Then interact with Irrai:
- It doesn't matter what you do to me. You'll be dead, or trapped for a thousand years!
- Why would you betray your Prince?
- Molag Bal is my Prince, you fool! I let Vastarie believe I was Azura's servant, just as I let you believe.
- I led you into Coldharbour's grasp. Morsels for the God of Schemes, to pick from between his teeth.
- I already escaped Coldharbour. I can do it again.
- When I fought Molag Bal, I broke a few of those teeth.
- <Imprison Irrai in the sigil geode.>
When you decide to continue talking:
- You can never truly escape Coldharbour, soul shriven. My Prince always gets what he wants. If you escaped, it's because he allowed it.
- My Prince is Endless. No mortal can defeat him.
I do hope you find Culanwe and gaze upon the instruments of her torment. One day it will be you upon the rending pinions, and I will bask in your boundless woe.
- Won't you care if I imprison you in the sigil geode?
- <Imprison Irrai in the sigil geode.>
- <Kill Irrai.>
When you decide to continue talking again:
- Do it! I've spent countless centuries imprisoned in a tablet. That stone would be a delightful change of scenery.
- Perhaps the banekin will pick it from your corpse and bring me to my Prince. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
- <Imprison Irrai in the sigil geode.>
- <Kill Irrai.>
Imprison her in the geode. Now you have finally some time to address some questions towards Vastarie:
- I'm not one to hope any creature suffers, but with Irrai I'll make an exception. She can spend eternity in the sigil geode, for all I care.
- Why was it so important to trap Irrai?
- Irrai is bound to her tablet. While she's within the sigil geode, we can use her as a tether to escape from Coldharbour. If I hadn't been so quick to destroy her those years ago, my companions would still be alive.
- Come, we should retrieve Culanwe.
- Where can we find Culanwe?
- At the base of these ruins is the hole her torment tears between worlds. But the moment we enter, Molag Bal's servants are likely to sense our presence.
- I'd have long ago made the attempt myself, if I had anywhere to flee.
- How can we close the portal?
- We must find Culanwe and free her from whatever cruel device causes her so much pain. Doing so should end her torment. When she no longer cries out, the rift between Coldharbour and Laeloria should close.
- I hope.
- Let's go.
- I kept this library clear of Daedra, but the chambers beyond are home to a variety of the creatures.
- It may be best to avoid them.
Accompanied by Vastarie now, press your way trough the ruin until you eventually reach the portal to Coldharbour. Follow the wizard trough the portal.
Hero to the Rescue
On the other side you will find Vastarie in a battle with a Dremora what buys you the time to take care of Culanwe's rescue. Advancing further you will find on an elaborate platform Culanwe's soul, being tortured above an altar where her remains have been placed upon. Her soul is kept imprisoned by the energy emanating from two crystals flanking the platform. Release the priestess' soul by shattering those soul prisons, but be aware that they are not undefended. As soon as you approach each, three Dremora will com to their protection respectively.
After you shattered the crystals, climb up the stairs to the altar and collect Culanwe's remains in order to take them back to Nirn. Return to Vastarie to discuss your exit strategy:
- We've done it. We freed Culanwe from her torment.
- It was worth the wait.
- If the portal is closed, how do we get back?
- Irrai brought us both through the seal. It's only fitting she bring us back.
- I can use the sigil geode to trace her soul back, and then it's a simple matter to open a portal. Are you ready?
- I am.
- Then prepare yourself. Departing Coldharbour is never easy.
You will find yourself and the wizard outside the entrance to Laeloria, next to the Twilit Heart. It is about time to depart, so have a farewell chat with her:
- It is good to stand beneath the sky once more. To feel the breeze upon my skin.
- And I wouldn't have made it here without you. My home is always open to you, should you care to visit.
- How long were you trapped in Laeloria?
- Eighty-eight years, three months, eleven days. Thirteen hours. Seven minutes.
- That's very precise.
- What will you do, now?
If you address her precision:
- All right, I'm showing off. I used a simple spell to mark the time. It was the first thing I did when I realized I was trapped.
- It's not entirely precise, so I had to guess the minutes.
- What will you do, now?
When you ask her about her future plans:
- Clear my tower of Daedra, for one. Memorialize my companions who did not return. Organize my effects.
- Then, I'll find out what has transpired in this world since I left. I have some catching up to do.
- Your companions?
- Will you be staying at your tower?
If you ask about her companions:
- I opened my home to many I met in my travels. A young Redguard swordsman, a scarred Wood Elf hunter, a Psijic outcast ... I can still hear their voices.
- But that was ninety years ago. Those not killed by the Daedra must have fled.
- Will you be staying at your tower?
When you ask her about her future whereabouts:
- For a time, though I expect my attention shall be drawn elsewhere soon enough.
- There was something different in Coldharbour. The air was a little too full, the fires too bright.
- You speak as though you've been there before.
- Molag Bal's corner of Oblivion holds many secrets. I plundered several from his halls, a lifetime ago.
- Did you know, I did it to impress a boy? What a fool I was.
- What boy was worth traveling to Coldharbour?
- Telacar. A powerful mage, brilliant, always focused upon his work ... hardly striking, though such things never mattered to me. It took my escapade in Coldharbour to convince him there were adventurous women outside of his books.
- But that was long ago.
If you already solved the quest The Unquiet Dead, you will get now some dialogue options related to how you solved it. If you did not, she might hint you to that quest now.
Say Goodbye to Vastarie in order to take Culanwe's remains to their final resting place at the nearby shrine of Azura. Interact with the daedric princess' statue in order to receive Azura's thanks and your reward:
- <A quiet stillness hangs over the shrine, but you feel a sense of anticipation.>
- <Place Culanwe's Bones before the Azura Shrine.>
- Culanwe. Beloved of the wild ones. My priestess returns from the clutches of Coldharbour at last.
- Vastarie is here, as well.
- So I have seen. A mortal has managed what the eternal dead could not.
- Is there anything else I can do?
- Much, when it is time. You have taught humility to a Daedric Prince, mortal. Tread carefully, for he will attempt to exact his revenge.
- Now go, with my blessing. When I have need of you, you will know.
Close the quest to acquire your reward.
Notes
- Look to the wall behind Vastarie when she has Irrai pinned down, you will find the Journal of Culanwe. Reading it, it becomes clear what might have called Molag Bal's wrath upon the priestess.
