Quick Walkthrough

1. Speak to Neloth.
2. Allow him to cast an experimental spell on you.
3. Enter the water at any point in gameplay.
4. Return to Neloth to report the side effects of his spell.

Detailed Walkthrough

Neloth will request you help him with an experiment. Agree and he will cast an experimental spell on you, requesting that you report to him any side effects. After this, leave and at some point go into the water (swimming or being in the rain counts). This will cause a permanent 25 point decrease to your maximum health. Return to Neloth and he will remove the spell, restore your maximum health value, and pay you a small amount of gold for your trouble.

Note that if you refuse to assist him with this task, you will immediately fail the quest.

Bugs

• When Neloth asks if you are willing to be an experimental subject, the dialogue may end without presenting the option "What kind of experiment". This means the quest cannot be started.
  • PC Only This bug is fixed by version 2.0.4 of the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch.
  • It may also break the Research quest chain. Completing another quest for Neloth may restore the proper dialogue functions.

Notes

• Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
• Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
• Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
• If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
• On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage DLC2TTR4a stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest DLC2TTR4a.
