Liber Aldmeris

The Liber Aldmeris is an extensive effort of mine to lay out the history of the Elven Races (Mer), starting from the sundering of, and departure from, the legendary land of Aldmeris, the ancestral home of the Elves, to the Third Century of the Fourth Era (the events of TES V: Skyrim). It is my personal reckoning, however, that this project won't be completed for some time; thus, I will work too much on this project, lest I be distracted from my other duties. I will try as hard as possible to write it a scholar in Tamriel would, and to keep it as accurate as possible.

Introduction

I suppose for some novices of Elven history I may have to give an explanation as to what this place called "Aldmeris" is. In truth, it is a simple question with a somewhat complex answer, and there are a few key points which the reader must understand before they can extend their comprehension to Aldmeris itself.

First and foremost, one must know that there is some controversy as to what Aldmeris really was, or, in the eyes of some, is. There are many who will argue that Aldmeris was not a place, but a thougth, or, rather, many thoughts; an idea, to be most accurate. It is believed by many to have been a collection of thoughts and memories, left over from the chaos of the beginning of the Elven Races in the Dawn Era. Others, however, claim that Aldmeris was (and possibly is) a very real place. Though neither argument can be proven, as none live who remember those beginning days, it is often speculated that, were it a real place, it would have been located somewhere to the south of Tamriel, due to the fact that the elves (to be more specific, the Aldmer) first settled on the Summerset Isle.

Secondly, it is important to recognize that, over a period of four eras, all history and lore related to the actual characteristics of Aldmeris have been utterly lost. Thus, everything that is said of Aldmeris is often pure speculation or conjecture based off of some obscure sentence of an obscure ancient text. Therefore, one should always approach all texts dealing with Aldmeris (including this section of the Liber Aldmeris) with the utmost scrutiny and skepticism.

Last, but certainly not least, is the reason as to why the Aldmer left their mythic homeland. Those that believe Aldmeris to be a real place often say that it was due to some great cataclysm, or another sort of catastrophic event, that forced the Aldmer to leave their homeland. Others still say that the island simply became overpopulated or that the Aldmer of the Summerset Isles were outcasts, banished for some sort of evil act. All of these are likely, and no school of thought has become dominant, even after nearly 5,000 years of study.
