Reaction describes how NPCs react to your presence, if they detect you, and how you can interact with them. The reaction of certain NPCs may change during quests, especially between Neutral and Hostile. There are a total of four types of reaction. If you have the "Target Glow" setting set, the different reactions can be discerned by the color of the target's glow.

  • Friendly (No Glow): Friendly NPCs can only be talked to. They may engage in combat, but cannot be harmed by players and cannot be killed. Quest-givers, vendors and followers are always friendly.
  • Justice Neutral (White Glow): Justice neutral NPCs are tied to the Justice System. They can be pickpocketed, and even attacked and killed if the "Prevent Harming Innocents" setting is not set. Doing so will invoke a bounty if you're seen.
  • Neutral (Yellow Glow): Neutral NPCs don't attack you on sight, but fights with them can be picked without incuring bounties. They cannot be pickpocketed[verification needed].
  • Hostile (Red Glow): Hostile NPCs will attack you on sight.
