Description

Dead Thrall is a Master level Conjuration Spell... "Reanimate a dead body permanently to fight for you. Only works on people."

Playing the game with one or two permanent Dead Thrall minions is a play-style in its own right; very powerful, unique and entertaining.

Obtaining the Spell

Obtaining a Thrall, or Two

Generic NPC

Forsworn

  • Forsworn Camps make great thrall farms for your choice of leveled archers, warriors, or mages.
  • Level 1 = Forsworn, or Forsworn Shaman
  • Level 6 = Forsworn Forager
  • Level14 = Forsworn Looter
  • Level 24 = Forsworn Pillager
  • Level 34 = Forsworn Ravager
  • Forsworn warriors will always dual-wield for non-stop attacking, not pausing to block.
  • Forsworn mages will summon Frost Atronachs and use Icy Spear.
  • Forsworn archers use Forsworn Bow, which can be improved twice as much at a grindstone by using the steel weapons perk (only one perk spent in smithing) making the bow comparable to (or even better than) higher level bows.
  • Forsworn will equip a full set of Forsworn Armor (leather) if you place it on their corpse whether they died wearing a full set or not, and requires no perks in smithing to improve. All other thralls must wear whatever armor that they died in.
  • Forsworn have different facial tattoos that make it easy to ensure that you have reanimated two different thralls. There is bug associated (see below) with having two thralls that are both identical. With Forsworn, you can raise two that seem to be identical except for hairstyle or facial tattoos and the bug will not be an issue because they are in fact slightly different. So if you want two archers or two mages or two warriors, it will not be an issue.

Vampires

  • Vamipres are another good source of strong generic leveled thralls. They are very powerful, yet they are less varied, and less easily replaced if lost, and suffer from weakness to fire which make dragons a problem.
  • Level 1 = Fledgling Vampire
  • Level 6 = Vampire
  • Level 12 = Blooded Vampire
  • Level 20 = Vampire Mistwalker
  • Level 28 = Vampire Nightstalker
  • Level 38 = Ancient Vampire
  • Level 48 = Volkihar Vampire (Level 48 requires necromage perk to reanimate)
  • Level 14-42 Master Vampire (Level 42 requires necromage perk to reanimate)
  • Level 53 = Volkihar Master Vampire (not possible to reanimate as a thrall).

Unique NPC

Unique NPC's will retain their unique abilities when reanimated. For example,

However, most NPC's such as these are leveled with the player which means once the player is above level 40 then the character will not be possible to reanimate.

Followers

If a follower dies in battle, they can be resurrected as a thrall. However, they cannot be raised after level 40, and after changing zones they will not wear what armor they died in.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use a Dead Thrall as storage for an unlimited amount of items but you can only access the thrall's inventory when it is dead, and then reanimate it again.
  • To "kill" your thralls easily (for the purpose of giving them stuff), simply cast a frost cloak spell if you can.
  • With the Twin Souls perk, Two Dead Thrall can be kept permanently, along with a follower. If you make two of your thralls frost summoning mages, and equip your follower with the Sanguine Rose (which summons Daedra), you could find yourself at the head of a small army: 1 Player + 2 Mage Thralls + 2 Frost Atronach + 1 Follower + 1 Daedra, and a Horse.
  • Unlike other reanimate spells, zombies raised by Dead Thrall do not disintegrate to ash piles upon death and so can be reanimated again.
  • Dead Thralls will equip weapons and staves that you place on their corpse prior to reanimation (requires a loading screen - travel to a new area). However, they only equip the exact armor that they died in. You can take their armor from their corpse in order to improve it and then replace it. But it must be the very armor they died in, not just a similar item with the same name. The exception is Forsworn; they will equip any Forsworn armor.
  • A level 42 Master Vampire can be upgraded to a level 53 Volkihar Master Vampire by getting caught trespassing with the thrall and then paying the fine. You will be transported out of the cell and the thrall will advance to the next tier of its type. However, once beyond the level limit, the thrall can not be reanimated again if it dies.
  • Dead Thralls will level with the player. Once you are over the level limit for the spell, then you can only use level-capped humanoids.
  • If a follower who dies is a Blade, then after reanimating them and changing zones, their default clothing will be a full set of Blades armor, which can be upgraded and enchanted.
  • It is not possible to cast Dead Thrall on a character that has been decapitated, regardless of level.
  • Use places like the Ragged Flaggon cistern or the Arch Mage's quarters to store inactive Dead Thralls (corpses). At one point in the main quest you will be attacked in your house and any corpses being stored there will be gone.

Bugs

  • While having a Dead Thrall active, the default dialog from every other NPC in the game will be complaints, comments, or warnings about your "dangerous spell" - this can get very annoying but doesn't seem to affect gameplay in any real way.
  • It is best to keep track of your Dead Thrall(s) at all times and save often; they have a tendency to get lost. After fast travel, verify that your thralls have appeared with you (they can sometimes appear after a brief pause). Sometimes "waiting" for 1 hour will cause the thrall to reappear. Sometimes returning to the last place that you had it will cause it to show up there. Sometimes it will reappear randomly after a long period of time. Very often however the thrall just needs to be replaced. If you are using a special or named thrall that you are especially fond of, then the only choice is to reload a previous saved game. However capable Thralls of all types can be had at Forsworn camps, vampire caves, etc, so you may just want to try something different - you are a necromancer after all.
  • If your thrall gets lost, you may still have an Active Effect called "Reanimate Thrall" with an extremely long time remaining. To remove this effect, try one of the following:
  • cast a cloak spell (such as Frost Cloak, or Flame Cloak)
  • being arrested and serving the jail time
  • shifting into Werewolf form
  • recasting a temporary reanimation spell
  • If you have two Dead Thralls that are exactly the same, then one of them will be lost when you travel between areas.
  • Using a summon staff of any kind yourself, such as Sanguine Rose will kill a thrall (by replacing it). However give the staff to a thrall or a follower and they may use it with impunity.
  • Meridia's Shrine may cause thralls to disappear unless the player kills them before placing her beacon at the shrine.
  • When returning to a place where you left a thrall corpse, you will sometimes find the corpse replaced with an alive and hostile version of your thrall.
