History

An abstract from the book A History Of Daggerfall by Odiva Gallwood:

There is sufficient archaeological evidence for the modern historian to believe that there has been some variety of human settlement in the city-state of Daggerfall starting at least a thousand years before recorded history. The first use of the name Daggerfall to refer to the area around the current capitol was most probably in the 246th year of the 1st Era. The north half of the Iliac Bay, in fact all of the current province of High Rock, was conquered by invading Nords who brought a rough sort of civilization with them. One of the first civilized acts the Nords performed was a census -- the so-called Book of Life. Listed on page 933 of the Book is this entry:

"North of the Highest bluffs, south of the moors, west of the hills, and east of the sea is called DAGGERFALL. 110 men, 93 women, 13 children under 8 years of age, 58 cows, 7 bulls, 63 chickens, 11 cocks, 38 hogs live here."

The last census, in the year 3E 401, lists the population at over 110,000. It is always difficult to find an exact number, but the capitol city of Daggerfall certainly outnumbers her rivals, Sentinel and Wayrest.

Daggerfall, by tradition, is said to refer to the knife the first chieftain threw to form the borders of his lands. But there are other legends that may have equal validity.

The City

The city of Daggerfall is among Sentinel City and Wayrest City one of the biggest cities in the Iliac Bay. The city is surrounded by a mighty city wall. Four city gates, one for each cardinal direction, provide unrestricted access to the urban area from 06:00 to 18:00. The city houses numerous Service Buildings and Taverns. The Fighters Guild, The Knights of the Dragon, the Mages Guild and the Temple of Kynareth can also be found within the city.

Castle Daggerfall

The most prominent structure of Daggerfall City is Castle Daggerfall. The castle itself is located near the north-wall of the city more to the east than to the west. In the front end of the castle is an ample parkway and a major road leads all the way from the castle's entrance to the south-wall of the city. The castle itself is surrounded by a moat filled with water and the only access to the castle's interior is via the main entrance in the inner courtyard.

The Royal Entrance Guard of Castle Daggerfall

When a visitor first enters the castle he or she will find him/herself in a small antechamber together with a royal guard. After ensuring one will neither draw a weapon nor cast a spell within the castle's wall and most important commit no act of trespassing, the royal guard opens the doors to the throne room and all guards will be in non-attack modus. Two royal knights flank the entrance to the throne room, where the court of Daggerfall spends its time. The royal couple King Gothryd and Queen Aubk-i stand near their thrones on an elevated platform. Among the numerous courtiers there are bards and jugglers as well as many royal knights and battlemages that will attack everyone who violates the promise made to the royal entrance guard. Among the courtiers are Lord and Lady Bridwell, Mobar and Lord Provlith the ambassador of Sentinel at the Daggerfall Court. The southwest door of the throne room leads to the kitchen where Cyndassa, a maid of the castle can be found. The Court Sorcerer of Daggerfall Popudax can also be found in a small room north of the throne room. The Dowager Queen Mynisera has a small chamber northwest of the throne room, but it should be mentioned, that entering her chamber is considered as trespassing. So if one has to do business with her one should do it quickly and then leave the castle as fast as possible. Otherwise the royal guards will start to attack the intruder.

Advancing further into Castle Daggerfall is considered trespassing and one must be prepared to be attacked by any guard along the way. However in the course of the Main Quest it is necessary to do this once.

Anytime one re-enters the castle after being attacked by the guards, they will be in non-attack modus again, until the next trespassing is committed, or they get attacked.
