Detailed Walkthrough

Acquiring the quest

A wounded marine by the wayside

As you approach the Shattered Shoals, you encounter an ailing Sergeant Firion who calls out to you, requesting help. Talk to her:

You there! Have you seen my squad?
I don't know what you mean.
We were on the Little Alkosh, part of the Dominion fleet sailing for Khenarthi's Roost. Then a hurricane blew up out of nowhere. Sails tore, hulls cracked, and we were thrown into the ocean.
I ended up here, but can't find the rest of my squad.
Did they survive the hurricane?
I thought I heard one of them calling out, but the ocean twists up sounds. If they're wounded or pinned down ....
Could you keep an eye out for my soldiers? They answer to Edhelas, Onglorn, and Nistel. Two of us can cover more ground.
I'll help find your squad.
This reply assigns you the quest.
I'm sure my squad made it to shore alive. Dominion marines constantly defy the sea's attempts to drown us, but hurricanes are another matter. I fear my squad is banged up worse than I am.
What can I do about their wounds?
Our ship's hold was packed full of an old Bosmer healing remedy. The labels say Torchbug Treacle, but marines call it glow juice.
The wreck scattered bottles across the beach, must be what brought out the alits.
Alits? What do you mean?
Squat creatures made of teeth, claws, and endless hunger. I've heard their cries up and down the beach since I came to.
Their sweet-tooth is bigger than their walnut brains. I saw one of the stupid thing swallow a whole bottle of glow juice.
If I see any, I'll bring torchbug treacle to your squad.
Good luck. Do me a favor? If you find them before I do, tell them the ocean hasn't killed me yet.
Goodbye

Rescue the squad members

Find the three members of Firion's squad, Edhelas, Onglorn and Nistel, scattered across the beach, the order is of no importance. The last one you find will tell you that they saw another Marine, Lieutenant Gelin, heading towards a nearby cave and ask you to find him. It will be of consequence later on this quest weather you hand them torchbug treacle or not. There is currently a bug related to their dialogs, see below.

Edhelas

Edhelas' surroundings

You find Edhelas at the shore sitting between some rocks in front of a shipwreck.

Who are you? Were you part of the fleet?
Sergeant Firion sent me to find you.
Alive? Good. That's good.
Waves smashed me against the ship. Cracked a few ribs. Not the best feeling.

If you carry any torchbug treacle with you:

Sergeant Firion said this torchbug treacle would help
Tastes like sandals boiled in mint perfume.
But if it knits my ribs, I'll drink the whole bottle.
If he is not the last you have to find:
I'll look for the rest of your squad.
Good. I'll find Sergeant Firion
Go. Get them back safe.
Goodbye
If he is the last you have to find:
I found everyone in your squad
Lieutenant Gelin pulled me ashore. Went to find shelter. Never came back.
Headed to a nearby cave. Find him. Tell him we're safe.
Goodbye

If you carry no torchbug treacle with you:

Sergeant Firion expects you. You need to go, now.
Sergeant Firion saw bottles of torchbug treacle on the beach. I'll go find some for you.

If you decide to send him to Sergeant Firion without giving him torchbug treacle:

I can manage. Talking makes me cough up blood.
So I'll quit jabbering.
I'll look for the rest of your squad.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with that same statement above.

If you agree to find some torchbug treacle, the conversation ends. When you talk to him again, he will ask:

Glow juice? You find some?
Sergeant Firion sent me to find you.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with that same statement above.

Nistel

Nistel's surroundings

Nistel is sitting behind a mast at another stranded ship wreck, a bit northwest from Edhelas.

I lost a lot of friends in that storm. Give me some good news.
Sergeant Firion sent me to find you.
I saw her swept overboard in that damned storm. Held onto the rigging long as I could, but it tore the skin off my palms. If I can't hold a weapon, I'm useless to my squad.
Do you have any bandages? I lost my kit to the sea.

If you carry any torchbug treacle with you:

This torchbug treacle might help.
Used to think this stuff was only good for practical jokes on snowy days.
Once I can heft Spleen-shanker, I'll push through the beach and find Sergeant Firion. How about you?
If she is not the last you have to find:
I told Sergeant Firion I'd find the rest of your squad.
Hope they appreciate their good fortune when you find them.
I can get inland, after I rest. Fight with purpose.
Goodbye
If she is the last you have to find:
I found everyone in your squad.
You should let Lieutenant Gelin know. He spit in fate's eye when he pulled me from the water. Said he saw a cave nearby and was going to look for shelter.
Goodbye

If you carry no torchbug treacle with you:

There's no time. Sergeant Firion expects you immediately.
Sergeant Firion said torchbug treacle might help. I'll look for some on the beach.

If you decide to send her to Sergeant Firion without giving her torchbug treacle:

I can manage. I wasn't holding the rope with my feet.
What about you? What's your plan?
I told Sergeant Firion I'd find the rest of your squad.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with that same statement above.

If you agree to find some torchbug treacle, the conversation ends. When you talk to her again, she will say:

Did you find any glow juice? I got some sand in my wounds. Don't ever do that, even by mistake.
I found some. Here you go.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with This torchbug treacle might help. above.

Onglorn

Onglorn's surroundings

Onglorn can be found sitting between some wooden beams at an large rock, a bit northwest from Nistel.

Bless Y'ffre, I'm glad you came by! Have you seen any other marines along the beach?
Sergeant Firion sent me to find you.
She's alive? I suppose that's some luck amidst all this wreckage.
Can't say the same for my leg. If I don't put too much weight on it I can manage a good hobble.

If you carry any torchbug treacle with you:

Sergeant Firion said this torchbug treacle would help.
Glow juice? By the gods, it just might! Soon as I can stand on my own, I'll head inland.
If he is not the last you have to find:
I need to find the rest of your squad.
Blessings upon you, stranger. I'll limp my way inland and find a safer place to wait for Sergeant Firion. Just knowing she's out there gives me hope for the rest.
Goodbye
If he is the last you have to find:
I found everyone in your squad.
Lieutenant Gelin dragged me out of the water. He'll want to know Sergeant Firion and the rest of the squad are all right. Think he said something about looking for shelter in a nearby cave, but I was still coughing up sand.
Goodbye

If you carry no torchbug treacle with you:

Push through the pain. Sergeant Firion needs you right away.
Sergeant Firion said there was torchbug treacle on the beach. I'll find some for you.

If you decide to send him to Sergeant Firion without giving him torchbug treacle:

The gods give us pain to test us. Or amuse themselves. Either way, I'll deal with it.
I need to find the rest of your squad.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with that same statement above.

If you agree to find some torchbug treacle, the conversation ends. When you talk to her again, she will say:

Praise the gods, you're back! I thought you were an alit.
Sergeant Firion sent me to find you.
From here on the dialogue continues the same way as with that same statement above.

Lieutenant Gelin

The cave entrance below the Temple of the Dark Moon
Lieutenant Gelin's remains

Head further northwest along the shore until you see a cave entrance below a temple, the Temple of the Dark Moon. Enter the cave, which is full of snakes, including one of the giant variety (Lvl 4, 192 HP, 61 XP). Gelin is in the back of the cave, tied to a post... and very much dead. Examine him to discover there is evidence of a ritual murder:

<Tied to a blood-stained post is the body of a Wood Elf marine. He appears to have died recently.>
<Examine the corpse>
<The armor bears the insignia of an Aldmeri Dominion marine lieutenant. His corpse is soaked in blood as if from many shallow cuts. Greenish foam mingles with the smeared blood.>
<Continue the examination>
<The cuts on the lieutenant's body form strange but repetitive patterns. His blood was smeared across the uncut portions of skin to create wave-like symbols. The exact cause of his death is unclear.>
Goodbye

Leave the cave again to see that Sergeant Firion and her squad have arrived on the scene. She needs backup to find Gelin's killers, and the ship Nistel spotted beached on the shore nearby may be just the ticket. Now is the first time you experience a consequence from your decision about how to treat the three squad members earlier. If you gave torchbug treacle to all of them, you'll get three bottles of torchbug treacle at the end of your talk with Sergeant Firion:

Turns out my squad were the ones who found me. Ever consider a career as a dominion marine? You'd make quite the scout.
My squad said you were looking for Lieutenant Gelin. Have you found him?
I found his body in the cave. Someone killed him.
What do you mean?
It looked like he was killed in some kind of ritual.
First a hurricane blows out of nowhere and destroys our fleet. Then an able-bodied Dominion marine is captured and tortured to death?
What else was in that cave?
Lots of bones, candles, and snakes. Also, wooden posts.
Some kind of sacrifice? This is too big for my squad to handle. We need reinforcements.
Nistel spotted a beached ship nearby. It looks intact, and she spotted Dominion sailors aboard.
What are you going to do?
We need to combine our forces and find who murdered Lieutenant Gelin. My squad and I need to pull his body out of that damned cave.
Would you warn the sailors on that beached ship? They need to know it's not safe to wander around.
I'll warn them.

If you gave torchbug treacle to all of the squad members:

Wait, take this. I found some glow juice while I was looking for my squad, but they're on the mend. You'll get used to the taste.
We'll be along shortly. Watch yourself.
Goodbye.

If you did not give torchbug treacle to even one of them:

Good. The squad's wounds are slowing them down, but we'll be along shortly.
Goodbye.

Negotiations

Quartermaster Oblan

Scouting out the stranded ship, you eventually will close in at the shore side gangway. Here you spot a Khajiit organizing some repair works and getting close enough you will get the task to talk to him. The ship is called the Prowler, and you'll soon find that the Khajiit, Quartermaster Oblan, is less than excited to help, for two reasons: one, the ship is actually a privateer vessel; and two, they're in trouble as well:

You aren't a slik-arsed Sea Viper or a cabbage-mouthed castaway. State your business with the crew of the Prowler.
A dominion marine was killed in a nearby cave.
The hurricane killed hundreds of marines. Why does it matter if one of them died in a cave?
He was murdered in some kind of ritual. His squad needs reinforcements.
Oh. Well, the Prowler is like a hen in a wolf den until she's seaworthy again.
Maybe your marines can prove they're more than two-legged cargo in shiny armor. If they pitch in, I'll consider reinforcements. They up for it, or are they all talk?
Some are injured, but I'm sure they'll help where they can.
Stubbed their toes, eh? Never understand why they fight in sandals.
Until the leaks are patched, our hold will take on water. Oh, and our helmsman's wheel cracked in the storm. Locate a replacement in the wreckage and I'll have a sailor pick it up.
I'll see if they can find the helmsman's wheel and patch the ship.
Oh, and our sun-sighter!
It must have fallen overboard when we beached. Our lookout saw those skink-fingered pirates make off with it. You'll have to get the sun-sighter back, any way you can.
I have a few questions
Sure, talking's easier than working.
Well? Ask.

You can now, as often as you want, ask questions. To exit the questioning, select Goodbye. as reply to any of the statements.

Who are the Sea Vipers?
What's a sun-sighter?
Tell me about the Prowler.

When asking about the Sea Vipers:

Barnacles on the arse. They're all Sea Elves - "Maormer," they call themselves. Nothing more than pirates, if you ask me.
Some say they have a connection to the water itself, but it's a lie. Anyone can learn weather magic like they do.
What's a sun-sighter?
Tell me about the Prowler.

When asking about the sun-sighter:

Captain Jimila uses it to navigate. I could tell you how the sun and stars show the ship's exact position, but none of it matters while it's in the Sea Vipers' hands.
Who are the Sea Vipers?
Tell me about the Prowler.

When asking about the Prowler:

The pride of the Long Coast. We'll sail for the Dominion as long as they pay us to raid enemy shipping.
Are you pirates?
Who is in charge of the Prowler?

When asked whether they are pirates:

Jone and Jode, don't let the captain hear you say that.
Pirates steal and pillage for themselves. We're privateers, so we do it for whoever pays us. A crucial distinction!
Who is in charge of the Prowler?
Who are the Sea Vipers?

When asked who is in charge:

Captain Jimila took over the Prowler a few years ago. She's smart, cunning, and deadly dangerous when provoked.
She's also luckier than anyone I served. Every ship in the fleet smashed to flinders on Khenarthi's Roost. Every ship but the Prowler.
Are you pirates?
What's a sun-sighter?

Ship maintenance

The wheel is behind this wreckage, seen from the Prowler
The helmsman's wheel and it's guards
One of the leaks
The other leak

Talk to Firion again. This is the other occasion where having taken the time to collect torchbug treacle and giving it to the marines will pay back. You can have the sergeant order any squad member you gave torchbug treacle to, to take care about one of the tasks tat matches their skills or you can do them yourself. However, for each marine you did not give torchbug treacle, you have the task to do yourself:

These aren't Dominion sailors, they're privateers. Just our luck.
Quartermaster Oblan promised reinforcements when the Prowler is repaired.

If you had given torchbug treacle to none of the squad:

We're a little banged up, but we can still defend a beached ship from pirates. We'll show that old cat what Dominion marines are made of.
Goodbye

If you had given torchbug treacle to any member of the squad:

We'll show that old sea-cat what Dominion marines can do.
The Prowler needs a replacement helmsman's wheel. (only if given torchbug treacle to Edhelas)
There are leaks on the Prowler that need patching.(only if given torchbug treacle to Nistel)
The Sea Vipers stole the Prowler's sun-sighter(only if given torchbug treacle to Onglorn)

When telling her about the helmsman's wheel:

Edhelas is the best scrounger in the regiment. If you want, I can send him out to look for a helmsman's wheel.
All right. Send Edhelas to find a replacement.
I'll find the helmsman's wheel myself.
When telling her to send Edhelas:
He's on his way. Anything else we can do?
When telling her you will take care yourself
All right. What else?
In both cases you can respond:
There are leaks on the Prowler that need patching. (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Nistel)
The Sea Vipers stole the Prowler's sun-sighter (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Onglorn)
I can handle the rest myself. (if there are tasks remaining)
There's nothing left to do (if there are no tasks remaining)

When telling her about the leaks:

Nistel is as good with a mallet as she is with her sword. I can have her patch the Prowler's leaks.
Yes, have Nistel patch the leaks.
No, I'll fix the leaks myself.
When telling her to send Nistel:
She'll have those leaks fixed in no time. What else?
When telling her you will take care yourself
All right. What else?
In both cases you can respond:
The Prowler needs a replacement helmsman's wheel. (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Edhelas)
The Sea Vipers stole the Prowler's sun-sighter (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Onglorn)
I can handle the rest myself. (if there are tasks remaining)
There's nothing left to do (if there are no tasks remaining)

When telling her about the sun-sighter:

Onglorn is our best tracker. He can recover the sun-sighter in no time.
Sure, send Onglorn to recover the sun-sighter.
No, I'll look for the sun-sighter myself.
When telling her to send Onglorn:
I almost pity the Sea Viper who's holding onto the sun-sighter. Onglorn will recover it soon enough. What else needs doing?
When telling her you will take care yourself
All right. What else?
In both cases you can respond:
There are leaks on the Prowler that need patching. (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Nistel)
The Prowler needs a replacement helmsman's wheel. (if not already decided and if given torchbug treacle to Edhelas)
I can handle the rest myself. (if there are tasks remaining)
There's nothing left to do (if there are no tasks remaining)

When telling her you will handle the rest yourself

All right. I appreciate what you've done for us. We'll keep the Prowler safe while you take care of the rest.
Goodbye

When telling here there is nothing left to do

Then it's time for that mangy privateer to make good on his promise.
Maybe you should do the talking. I'd just rub it in.
Goodbye

Every marine you have an task assigned to will run off, to execute it. The task is immediately considered done.

In case you decide, or have, to execute a task yourself:

The helmsman's wheel

You can find the helmsman's wheel to the west of the Prowler, behind a hill and some wreckage. It is guarded by two of the pirates (Lvl 4, 125 HP, 41 XP).

The leaks

The leaks are in the belly of the ship, accessible from either side of the deck.

The sun-sighter

The sun-sighter may be found randomly on the Sea Vipers (Lvl 4, 125 HP) to the west and north of the Prowler.

Their end of the bargain

Get all three jobs done and report back to Oblan:

That was fast. All right, there's room on the Prowler for your marine friends, as long as they work for their meals.
You promised reinforcements
I said I'd consider it. Captain Jimila is the only one who can make that call.
Then what does your captain say?
Something you'll want to hear. You just made the Prowler seaworthy, an Captain Jimila always pays her debts.
Go, talk to her. She only bites if you give her good reason.
Goodbye.
Captain Jimila

The captain is on the forecastle of the ship, surveying the area. Go and talk to her:

Due to your efforts, the Prowler is free to sail once the tide comes in. Those marines did their part as well.
I have no reinforcements, but I offer something better. I know who's killing the Dominion soldiers. And I know how to stop it.
What do you mean?
Our lookout watched the Sea Vipers drag a Dominion marine into a cave. Later, he saw your friends remove the marine's body.
If we weren't so short-handed I'd have ordered his rescue, but three of my own crew were missing.
What happened to your crew?
Before we understood the danger, I sent my crew to scavenge among the shoals so we might repair the Prowler. We thought they'd disappeared, but one just returned - and she tells a harrowing tale.
What happened to her?
The Sea Vipers happened. Now there's a new storm brewing, and I fear they're the cause of it.
Mastengwe recovers below. Hear what she has to say for yourself.
Goodbye

Taming the wind

The hurricane covers Sea Viper flagship
Virkvild bound to be sacrificed

You find Mastengwe regenerating in one of the cabins below:

The Sea Vipers are insane! They're trying to create another hurricane!
Another hurricane? What do you mean?
Suhr, Virkvild, and I were scavenging for a replacement helmsman's wheel when the Sea Vipers ambushed us. They brought us to the island with the beached Dominion flagship.
They'd done things there, terrible things.
What have the Sea Vipers done?
Those filthy Maormer dragged my mates up and tied them to these serpent-shaped statues. Then they started chanting, and lightning surrounded them!
The Sea Vipers created the storm?
Yes, I'm sure of it. It was a terrible sight. The Sea Vipers were so caught up in the ritual, I slipped free.
I tried to grab Suhr, but the lightning held him fast. Then one of the Sea Vipers yanked at him. I saw the Maormer's wrist glow.
Why would the Sea Viper's wrist glow?
The Maormer wore lodestones on their wrists. It let them ignore those lightning bonds. But I couldn't find any more, so I jumped off the ship and swam for it.
Please, don't let them sacrifice my crew mates!
Goodbye.

In order to get Suhr and Virkvild back, you'll need a lodestone too. Go out and slay a Sea Viper to get one, then head northwest of the Prowler to the eye of the gathering storm. You'll pass by a skyshard on the way and may encounter some Sea Vipers (Lvl 4, 125 HP) Once on the ship there may be Jyklos (Lvl 4, 384 HP) present in the eye of the hurricane. He is the mage leading the ritual and will provide a tough fight if you are at beginner levels. But he has a long respawn interval, so it might be you will miss him. Activate your lodestone at both Suhr and Virkvild to release them from their bonds. They'll run off gratefully. Your work here is done, so head back to the Prowler.

Collect your reward

Talk to the Captain in order to finish the quest:

Suhr and Virkvild returned just after the skies cleared up. They're a bit damp, but otherwise all right.
My lookout says I have you to thank.
Yes. I stopped the ritual and freed your crewmen.
Then we'll finish repairs and shove off at high tide. Oh, your marine friends fended off Sea Vipers while you rescued my crew. They're welcome aboard as long as they want.
Perhaps we'll see you at Mistral. You'll always have a place on the Prowler.
Complete Quest

Bugs

  • When rescuing the three marines, if you talk to one of them without having any torchbug treacle and then use the dialogue option to tell them you will gather some, get it, return and give it to him, the task will not be closed in the journal and you will not be able to finish that stage of the quest. ?
    • Either have torchbug treacle with you before you talk to each marine or send them off without giving any torchbug treacle to them, but do not use the dialogue option. If you have already done so, drop the quest and start it anew.
